Dodge Sentry Key (SKIM) — How the Charger and Challenger Anti-Theft Works
Dodge uses the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) to prevent unauthorized starts. Every Dodge key contains a transponder chip that communicates with the SKIM module. If the chip isn't recognized, the SKIM activates and cuts fuel — the engine turns over but won't start, and the security light stays on.
For Chargers and Challengers (2011–2024), Dodge added a full proximity smart key system for push-to-start operation. This requires pairing the new key fob to the Vehicle Security Module (VSM) using FCA StarSCAN or equivalent OBD-II diagnostic protocols.
Charger and Challenger Key Types by Year
- 2011–2014 Charger/Challenger: OHT692427AA fob + PATS transponder. proximity key with basic smart entry.
- 2015–2018 Charger/Challenger: OHT1056EP fob + upgraded SKIM. Push-to-start with proximity entry.
- 2019–2023 Charger/Challenger: M3N-40821302 fob + latest SKIM + SmartKey integration. Full push-to-start, hands-free entry on SRT models.
- SRT Hellcat / Redeye / Jailbreak (all years): Red performance key (increases power limit to full output). Black key limits horsepower for valet mode. Both keys must be programmed to the same VSM.
The Hellcat Red Key — What Happens If You Lose It
This is the question we get asked most about Hellcats. The Red Key is not just cosmetically different — it tells the PCM to allow full power output. The Black Key limits horsepower to approximately 500 hp for valet/security use. Dodge ships every Hellcat with one of each.
If you lose the Red Key, the car still starts and drives with the Black Key — but you're limited to the performance-restricted mode. We can program a new Red Key to your Hellcat's VSM. The new red-marked key must be paired with the performance calibration enabled, which requires FCA-compatible OBD-II access. We handle this completely on-site.
What to Have Ready
